Reeves, who, about forty years ago, began a col¬ lection of data pertaining to persons bearing the name Reeves or Reeve, irrespective of relationship, and in the course of a number of years had accumulated matter of considerable volume. He died without having put this material into read¬ able form, and it is our intention at this time, in compliance with his wish, to roughly sketch the history of his branch of the family and of such collateral branches as he felt might be of interest to his descendants. The information he left and that which we have since gathered, was obtained from the Office of the Secretary of State, at Trenton, from County Court Records, from old Bible records and from family records in the possession of descendants. Much information has been furnished by Mr H. Clifford Campion, Jr., of Media, Pa., and we wish to express our appreciation for his most generous assistance. That which is doubtful or not entirely authentic will be indi¬ cated by the usual interrogation character, thus (?). The numbers in parenthesis at the left of certain names in the lists of children refer to the numbers of the paragraphs in the next chapter, in which those descendants so marked are further discussed. The following abbreviations will be used: b. — born; ab. — about; d. — died; m. — married. THE REEVES FAMILY FIRST GENERATION WALTER REEVE, the progenitor of this family, settled in Burlington county, New Jersey (then West Jersey), some time prior to 1678, probably before the first settlers came to Burlington. It has up to this time been quite impossible to discover whether he came direct to Burlington county from England or from the West Indies. The records from the Surveyor General’s Office establishes the fact that some of the same name living on Long Island did locate land in West Jersey from time to time and settle there and have descend¬ ants who have lived to the present day among Walter Reeve’s posterity, frequently bearing the same first names and mak¬ ing a confusing and difficult, but at times pleasant task, to the genealogist to distinguish one from the other family. The date of his birch is not known, but we can assume it to be between 1650 and 1657. He lived on the south side of the North Branch of Rancocas Creek, at first on land he never took title to. He later bought a plantation on the north side of the creek, about midway between the village of Rancocas and the present town of Mt. Holly. H^ says in his will that this plantation is on the north side of the creek, to the north¬ ward of my dwelling house, so we might infer his dwelling house was still on the south side of the creek, and well may have been, for the land he first occupied was called Reeve’s land in surveys and deeds up to 1743, when it was surveyed to Andrew Connaro, Feb. 8, 1743, as seventy acres. THE REEVES FAMILY And when Connaro sold it by deed of 18 June, 1756, to Charles Reed* it says, “Whereas Andrew Connaro by virtue of a Warrant from the Council of Proprietors had surveyed to him the quantity of seventy acres of land situate in the forks of the Ancocas being the land formerly called Reeves’ land.” Walter Reeves, besides the plantation above mentioned, had surveyed to him under Warrant, Dec. 16, 1693, by Daniel Leeds^Deputy Surveyor, 159 acres on the west side of North Branch of Rancocas Creek, and in June, 1695, he had surveyed to him 200 acres on the north side of the North Branch of Ran¬ cocas Creek, so that in all he had acquired 350 acres by survey and 160 acres he purchased beside the seventy acres where he first resided but never took title to. It is not known to whom he was first married, but we be¬ lieve her first name was Susannah, and it was probably sev¬ eral years before coming to Burlington County. His second marriage was to Ann Howell, Nov. 11, 1682. t He had issue by both wives. In his will, dated May 16, and proved June 18, 1698, he mentions: wife Anne, and sons John, William, and Joseph, and daughter Susanna. His will does not recite the name Jonathan, but a conveyance dated Aug. 1, 1710, shows his widow, Anne, conveying “the tract of meadow land lying next above the fork of Northampton River, upon the north side of the South Branch of said river, heretofore purchased of John Wills by deed dated January 20, 1708” to her son Jonathan. To this time we have shown that Walter had four sons and one daughter. In the will of his widow, Anne, who survived him about forty years, dated September 23, 1732, proved July 31, 1733, the following additional sons are named: Walter, Elisha, Caleb, and Samuel, making eight sons in all. *Deed Book N., p. 132. tBurlington Court Records, p. 1. 6 THE REEVES FAMILY In these early documents we And the name written at times without the final “s” which we use today. The transition from Reeve to Reeves is not difficult to under¬ stand when we note the variations in spelling the name of the same person. Documents of record show the name Reeve, Reve, Reave, Reeves. The latter rendering seems to have become quite fixed from or about 1685. According to Webster, “Reeve” is from Saxon “gerefa, ” an officer, steward, or governor. In the days of the Saxon rule in England we find “reeves” of various kinds looking after their lord’s manors. Ihere were fenreeves, looking after turbary rights; hythereeves, taking harbour dues; port¬ reeves in coast towns. In early histories of our own coun¬ try we come accross hog-reves, deer-reves, etc. It is obsolete except in compound words, as shire-reeve, now written sheriff. So we may say that the State has given us the name Reeves just as it has given us King, Earl, Chan¬ cellor and Mayor, and just as the Church has given us Pope, Bishop, Parsons, Clark (clerk), etc. Children of Walter Ree\e by first wife, Susanna: (1) i. Reeves. 1. JOHN REEVES'2, (Walter1), who was no doubt the eldest son of Walter Reeve, was probably born in England, although it is possible that he was born in Southold, Long Island. He resided in Burlington County, New Jersey, where, in 1704, he was granted the right to keep the ferry between the town of Burlington and the city of Philadelphia. Ferry privileges in colonial times were established by the authorities, and were among the most valuable franchises granted. The grant in this case was made by Governor Cornbury, and reads: - “Edward Viscount Cornbury, Captain-General and Governor-in-chief and over her Majesties provinces of New Jersey and New York, and all the territories and tracts of land depending thereon in American and Vice- Admiral of the same. “To Jeremiah Bass, Esq., Secretary of New Jersey, Greeting: “You are hereby required that you forthwith prepare a bill to pass under the Great Seale of this province, containing a grant of license to John Reeve, to keep the ferry betwixt the town of Burlington and City of Philadelphia upon the river Delaware, and you are to insert therein the prizes allowed him to take for ferriage of either goods, passengers, or any other carriage, vis. : for each passenger in company from the feast of our 19 THE REEVES FAMILY lady to the feast of St. Michaell the arch angel fore the sum-half year-one shilling if single to hire the boat, six shillings from the feast of St. Michaell, the arch angel, to the feast of our lady in the winter half year, single, seven and eight pence; in company fifteen pence for every tun of flower; ten shil¬ lings and six pence for every tun of bread; ten shillings for every hogshead of rum; three shilling and the same for molasses and sugar; for every pipe of wine five shilling; for all barrels one shilling per piece; for lead and iron six pence per hundred; for the beef ten pence per quarter; for every hogg ten pence; for every bushel of meale and salt three pence; sheep and calves at the same rate with the hogs dead. And you are to take security for the due performance of the same. “Given under my hand and seale this 11th day of December, Anno Reg Anno Nunc anglia, etc, Annoq pei, 1704. “CORNBURY.” Ferries at that period consisted of open boats with sails and gave but slight comfort to patrons, and while the scant records of the time furnish no facts relating to the conduct of the ferry in question, it is nevertheless conjectured that John Reeves kept within the terms of the monopoly granted, and was never complained against for exorbitant charges. He owned a landed estate in Burlington County, and it is believed that he died there in 1748, although he may have died at the home of one of his sons in Gloucester County, as the inventory of his estate appears to have been filed there. However, in this inventory, dated November, 1748, he is styled “late of Burlington County.” The estate was apprais¬ ed at over 13C0 pounds, a large estate for his time. In a deed executed by his son, Thomas Reeves, of Deptford Township, Gloucester Couuty, the father is called “son and heir at law of Walter Reeve.” John Reeves was one of the guests at the wedding of George Deacon and Martha Charles, which took place Febru¬ ary 22, 1693/4. He married in Burlington County at the house of Thomas Revell, Esq., the noted surveyor, July 22, 1695, Ann Bradgate. He married, about 1702, Rachel Sullivan, daughter of Thurlough and Katherine Sul¬ livan, of Evesham Township, Burlington County, formerly of New Castle County, Delaware, and before that of Mary¬ land. Rachel Sullivan was born 1688. We find that on January 26, 1705, Thomas Wakefield, second husband of Katherine Sullivan, gave bond to Abraham Hewlings and Wm. Hackney to secure the payment of £10 to Thulas Sulli¬ van when twenty-one, and £20 to Rachel Reeves and Mary Sullivan at eighteen years. So Rachel Sullivan was not yet eighteen years old, and was married before 1705. She sur¬ vived her husband and as a widow married by license dated September 19, 1750, Matthias Brook. THOMAS REEVES” (John'2, Walter1), the eldest son and heir at law of John Reeves, was born in Burlington County, 1698, and died in Deptford Township, Gloucester County, December 2, 1780, aged 80 years, as is learned from his grave stone which is the oldest in the ancient Reeves burying grounds at Woodbury. He was a well-to-do farmer and a large landed proprietor. In 1734 he conveyed two large tracts of land in Burlington County to Thomas Wetherell, at which time he was residing in Wellingborough in that county, but removed to Gloucester County about the same time. In a deed dated February 7, 1765, by which he conveyed a parcel of land to his cousin, Micajah Reeve, he is styled “son and heir at law” of John Reeves, and in the same instrument the latter is styled “son and heir of Walter Reeve.” The Pennsylvania Gazette, in its issue of March 3, 1757, contains this notice: “Philadelphia, February 26, 1757. “To be sold at private sale, at any time between this and the first of April next, a plantation, situated in Deptford Township. Gloucester County, about eleven miles from Philadelphia, and seven miles from Gloucester, and within half a mile from Mantua Creek, containing 200 acres, 30 of which is cleared, the rest well timbered, about five acres of meadow, with a good house, barn, stable, and other out houses, and a young orchard. Any per¬ son inclining to purchase, may apply to the subscriber, living near the premises. “THOMAS REEVES.” 24 THE REEVES FAMILY Thomas Reeves is the ancestor of most of the name of Reeves who have lived in Gloucester County. In his will it is noted that he wrote his name with a single “e” as did his father. The will, dated July 6, 1779, and proved June 1, 1782, names sons Biddle, Arthur, Thomas and Joseph, and a daughter, Ann Wood. To the latter he bequeaths three hundred pounds “in gold or silver.” He also named “grandson” Peter Rambo, “grandson” John( Reeves, and a “granddaughter, ” but did not name the latter, or give the names of the parents of eithor of these grand¬ children, He devised to each of his sons a plantation. He married Sarah - , who probably survived him, as she is menticned in his will. Her maiden name has not been ascer Lamed, although it is believed that she was a Miss Biddle, of Burlington County, and hence the Christian name of his eldest child.* Four sons, Biddle, Arthur, Thomas and Joseph, and a number of their descendants are buried with their father in the Reeves Cemetery which was founded about 1700 on the Homestead Farm. This cemetery had a gift of more land to enlarge it, by Biddle Reeves, 3rd (the owner of said farm), who died June 10, 1852. In 1856 the addition was enclosed and the other walls repainted and topped with coping stone and an iron gate was placed at the entrance. On January 2, 1860, David Reeves, then of Phoenixville,Pa., purchased thirty-four one hundredths of an acre adjoining the cemetery, of Isaac Reeves, Wm. Griscom and Jno. C. Small¬ wood, commissioners appointed by the Orphans’ Court to sell the estate of Biddle Reeves, deceased, and in December, 1870 the same David Reeves conveyed the same to Paul S. Reeves of Phoenixville, Fa., and Jos, L. Reeves of Clarksboro, *Taken from “Sinnott Annals.” 25 THE REEVES FAMILY N. J., or their successors in trust for the use of said cemetery, free for all the relatives of those then buried in said cemetery, “Provided that in case either of the trustees or any succeeding trustee die or renounce said trust, then it shall be the duty of the remaining or surviving trustee to present a petition to the Or¬ phan’s Court of the County of Gloucester to appoint in the place of the trustee so dying or renouncing, which person appointed shall be and stand seized of the said premises in trust for the same uses and purposes as hereinbefore mentioned,” and is recorded in the Clerk’s Office of the County of Gloucester, at Woodbury. He mar¬ ried about 1719, Elizabeth Ostler, who died after February 28, 1760, at which time Jacob Garwood wrote his will in which he says, ‘‘Item, I give to Elizabeth Reeves, wife of William Reeves, my deceased wife’s sister, the sum of 12 pounds and if she should die before me then the said moneys to be divided among my surving children.” He died before March 2, 1761, when his will was proved, and the account of the estate gives no record of payment of her legacy so we assume she died before him. Married March 18, 1736, Hannah (Wilson) Budd, widow of John Budd. He kept store in Woodbury 28 THE REEVES FAMILY from 1770 to the time of his death. His nephew, Alexander Bennett lived with or worked for him when he kept store, as is shown by the diary of Samuel Mickel. Alexander was the son of his sister, Mary (Reeves) Bennett. Hannah had two j sons, John Budd and Samuel Budd, at the time of her mar¬ riage to Jonathan Reeves. On May 3, 1760, Jonathan re¬ leases his right of dower in the 500 acre plantation of his wife’s former husband, John Budd. to her sons John and Samuel Budd. John Budd, Jr., gives receipt. Hannah was buried March 29, 1772, at Mt. Holly. They had : (12.) i. AMARIAH REEVES4, b. July 27, 1738. 8. SAMUEL REEVES3, (William2, Walter1), was born about 1712 and died after 1758. He probably married (first) about 1735 or ’38 Mary (?) Norcross, probably eldest child of John and Mary (Antrim) Norcross, who were married in 1712. John Norcross petitioned to Court of Burlington Co., N. J., for support in 1760 and the Court made an order on the following people to contribute to his support: John Nor¬ cross (who was nis son), Michael Braunin (who had married ^ his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1737, Robert Braddock (who had married his daughter Frances, in 1731), and Uriah Reeves (who is taken to be a grandson). From the Minute Book of the Board of Freeholders of Northampton Township under dates of March 8, 1757, July 18, 1758, December 31, 1759 and April 17, 1760 there are numerous entries showing that one . Samuel Reeves a poor lunatic was then a resident of North¬ ampton Township, and that the freeholders questioned if he was not a resident of Evesham Township, and contended that that township should pay for his support. A suit was brought against Northampton Township in regard to the matter and evidently Northampton lost the suit, for under the latter date (1760) at a meeting held at Bridgetown (now 29 ■jp wvctiB Ivov. ^ ^ • THE REEVES FAMILY Mt. Holly) “Between a committee appointed by the respec¬ tive Townships of Northampton and Evesham it is agreed that Northampton do pay unto the Township of Evesham the sum of Five Pounds in full of their demands for all costs and charges they were at on account of Samuel Reeve a a Lunatick Pauper and it is further agreed that the Township of Northampton shall pay unto John Lawrence Esq. Att. at Law his full demands on a suit commenced by the Township of Evesham against the Township of Northampton on account of said Reeves and it is finally agreed that the said Samuel Reeve shall be maintained by the Township of North¬ ampton so long as he may legally require assistance. ” There were two Samuel Reeves or Reeve of near the same age at this time, one the son of Walter Reeves, Jr., and one the son of William. Samuel, son of Walter, Jr., on August 28,1760, was granted letters of administration to his sister Elizabeth Reeves’ estate, so he was not the above pauper, nor was he then of unsound mind, so we conclude Samuel son of William was probably the one referred to who prob¬ ably suffered from some mental trouble which probably af¬ fected him about 1755 or ’56 and also this would account for the fact that he was not among those ordered by the court to contribute to the support of his first wife’s old father, John Norcross, but instead his eldest son, Uriah, who was a man grown by 1760. We are under the impression that Samuel Reeves was born on the farm Walter left to his son William-, which was in Northampton Township, and that Samuel' after his second marriage probably lived in Evesham on the Heustis farm for a time, hence the freeholders lest \heir case when it was proved that he was a native of Northampton Township. He may have had other issue than the four children men¬ tioned below . 3 he two eldest we are reasonably sure of, but have no proof. The two youngest we know were his. 30 THE REEVES FAMILY Samuel Reeves married (2nd) by license dated January 12. 1747, Hannah, daughter of Joseph and Hannah Heustis, of Evesham, Burlington Co. Holly; he married Jane - ?; we are not authentically sure of her maiden name, but believe to be Ives, who was born in 1715 and died June 28, 1800, at the age of 86 years; is buried in the Methodist grounds at Port Elizabeth. They lived in Burlington County, N. J., on his father’s plantation. His will, dated August 28, 1767, and proved September 26, 1767, names wife Jane, and sons Henry, John, Abraham and Joseph; wife Jane and 34 THE REEVES FAMILY son John, executors*, and says, in part, “I 'give and be¬ queath unto my dear and well beloved wife, Jane Reeve, all my moveable Estate whatsoever— and also the use of my piece of marsh so long as she shall dwell on the plantation where I now dwell (being my father’s plantation).” All his lands he devises and describes, except the plantation where he says “he dwelt (being his father’s plantation).” Evi¬ dently his father was still living. He could not devise the plantation, and did not need to, as it would automatically descend to his eldest son, John. We infer also from the wording of this part of the will that Joseph’s mother, Eliza¬ beth, was dead, or, possibly, too feeble to keep house for his father so he made his wife’s legacy conditional upon her remaining on his father’s plantation to keep house for him and their sons to work the farm. Some of this man’s descendants con¬ tend, that it was an Azariah Reeves who married March 5, 1765, Sarah - and had the following children. We lean to premises that Jonathan had but one son, Amariah; whose name, perhaps, was incorrectly spelled at times, and that he probably married twice. Samuel Reeve and his first wife joined the Evesham Meeting by request and the dates of their births and deaths as well as their parents’ names appear in the Meeting records. Samuel left no will, but he had 300 acres of land in the Indian Reservation at Indian Mills, and as some of his children were minors at the time of his death, the Orphan’s Court appointed Commissioners, to divide the 300 acres among the children and from this division we have the names of the surviving children. JOHN REEVES5, (Joseph4, William3, William2, Walter1), was born August 1, 1741. He inherited the 160 acre planta¬ tion left by Walter1 in his will to his son William2, who was John ’ s great-grandfather, and added to it by purchase of other lands until he held about one thousand acres. While John inherited the 160 acre plantation auto¬ matically, being eldest son of Joseph4 who in turn had in¬ herited it from his father, William3, eldest son of William2, we find that on January 22, 1773, he received a deed* for it from Thomas Reeves3, the eldest son of the eldest son of Walter’s first marriage. Probably owing to the disturbed times and the chance of the English Inheritance Laws changing he felt it safer to have a confirming deed, as neither his great-grandfather William2, nor his grandfather, William3, had left wills devising the farm to him or to his father. It is situated in Burlington County on the Rancocas Creek, about two and a half miles from Mt. Holly, and it was here that he built his home and reared his family, and where he died, February 26, 1800. He is buried at Mt. Holly. His will, dated January 17, 1794, Executors, son, Ebe^fend friend Thomas Paterson, was proved March 13, 180ti£j He married Sarah (Reeves) Paterson (widow of JprMniah Patterson), of Red Bank, January 8, 1769. Sarah was born March 4, 1737 and was a cousin, being the daughter of Walter2, and Ann (Bennett) Reeves. She died April 6, 1807. *Vol, H-3, p 378 East Jersey Deeds. tLiber 39 of Wills, p. 56. 40 THE REEVES FAMILY Although nurtured in Quaker principles, John was ready and willing to fight for his country, serving with distinction in the Revolutionary War. At one time they lived at Evesham, Burlington County, but about the year 1780 or ’82, Henry and his wife and his brother Abraham left Mt. Holly and settled at Port Eliza¬ beth, where they bought a great deal of land at 25 cents an acre. Henry was a Freeholder of Maurice River Township in 1781, 1794, 1797 and 1805. On April 5, 1811, Reeves sold to Jacob Stanger, Fred Stanger and William Shough the land on which the works stood, for $320. On June 6, the same year, they sold to Randall Marshall (Mary Reeves’ husband) a fourth for 42 THE REEVES FAMILY $1000. Factories were probably run by the said parties until some time during 1814. On Nov. 5, 1814, commission¬ ers appointed by the court divided the property among the four owners. The buildings were afterwards partially destroyed by fire and finally fell down from old age on a clear, still day. x. ABRAHAM REEVES6, b. Feb. 27, 1788; d. May 17, 1859; m. JOHN REEVES'5, (John*, Joseph4. William3, William2, Walter1), was born August 29, 1772, on the farm in Burling¬ ton County purchased by his father. From John the farm passed to his son, Joseph Reeves, and from him to his son, George Farmer Reeves. By this time (1864) the one thous¬ and acre farm had been reduced by sales to 100 acres. John married, January 13, 1799, Sarah Ann Cloud, who was said 52 THE REEVES FAMILY to be the prettiest girl in Mt. Holly. John was a Quaker and Sarah Ann was an Episcopalian. They were married out of meeting, and as he was too stiff necked to make a public ac¬ knowledgment, his name was taken off the books. He and his family, however, used the plain language and attended Quaker meetings. He died August 15th, 1844, and is interred at Mt. Holly, N. J. His mother, Sarah, in her will dated Feb. 9. 1849, says, “ to William C. Reeves, Daniel S. Reeves, John R. Reeves, children of my son, John Reeves, late of the State of Ohio, deceased, all my share of dower in 106 acre farm near Bethany in County of Butler in State of Ohio. ” . We infer from this that her father-in-law received this land for his services in the Revolution, as the family tradition says. Her husband certainly never lived in Ohio, but had evidently inherited this land from his father, and in turn she bequeaths it to her three grandsons. vi. ELIZABETH REEVES7, b. March 18, 1811; d.
